SynonymsFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Corporal is a rank in use in some form by most militaries and also by some police forces or other uniformed organizations. It is usually equivalent to NATO Rank Code OR-4. The word is probably derived from a medieval Italian phrase capo corporale, meaning "head of a body (of soldiers)". It may also derive from an appointment as an officer's bodyguard, "corporal" originally being an adjective pertaining to the word body. In most countries the rank of corporal nominally corresponds to being second-in-command of a squad of soldiers. In the commonwealth (except Canada) it is a more senior rank, commanding a squad of soldiers. In several countries such as Italy and Norway, Corporal is a more junior rank, indicating a more experienced soldier than a private, on a higher pay scale, but having no particular command appointment corresponding to the rank; similar to the U.S. Army 'Specialist'. This is a very interesting question! There are a number of cultural overtones in this concept. Actually, at least two Native American Indian tribes have tried /or did resurrect this form of punishment. Confinement is not a tradition among the tribes for wrong-doers; culturally , confinement is a cruel and unusual punishment. The one tribe that did carry out this punishment; the experiment at traditional justice was a failure. The "convict" was a young (twenty something)girl and could not endure the lashing. The choice of lashing or jail was given and she chose the lashing. This concept has been the subject of much debate; whether there should be a choice. The pros side advocates that, the corporal punishment choice allows someone to… [cont.] Answered by Morgan R - Tue May 20 12:36:03 2008 Do you believe that Corporal Punishment is a good thing? Q. What are your thoughts about Corporal Punishment? Do you believe that it is the parent(s) responsibility to be the punisher? Asked by Lynn - Tue May 19 04:14:21 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well to a certain extent i would say it depends on culture, if it's abt western countries it's heavily frowned upon so even if the child does deserve it it could lead to legal shows which leave the kid feeling like the one in power. Children of a certain age do act up unnecessarily it's just hormones but they need to understand that they cannot do what ever they want and get away with it makes them think they dnt have to respect others and leads to many psychological problems in one's later life. Again excessive 'beatings' or 'hitting' will just have the opposite effect, rebelliousness and rage develops in the child in question, instead various other punishments should be used, and corporal punishment only in extreme cases. Q. I am looking for established legal references and not personal opinions. If a child is physically assaulting a parent, and a slap in the face is given to distract the child in order to restrain them. Is this illegal in California? If so, could you please provide reference to where it is stated in California law? 9 year old boy 4'0" 65 lbs. Asked by greenpitch - Mon Dec 29 06:59:23 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. have you heard the golden rule for child behaviour?? ''spare the rod and spoil the child.'' Too much credence is given to mollycoddling kids today. They should be whipped, beaten, and taught the old fashioned way to know their place in society. Then crime would drop, streets become safer, and they would grow into responsible citizens instead of lazy layabouts.
