How many of you went to a school that implemented corporal punishment for breaking the rules?
Q. The high school I went to had what I think was a good system for corporal punishment, in offenses deemed worthy of suspending a student we were given the option of either getting paddled (the number of times was decided by the severity of the defense) or taking a suspension. If you were given the choice between a week's suspension or 10 swats which would it be?

A. "How many of you went to a school that implemented corporal punishment for breaking the rules" I never went to a school that implemented corporal punishment, but I did have a (history) teacher that hit me. It broke my heart because I really liked that teacher. It was a Yeshiva (a jewish school) and I was invited to spend shabbos at his house. In the jewish religion, its an honor to stay over a Teachers house. Because of this Teacher, my schoolwork and grades improved dramatically. Not just in his class, but in all my classes. I was actually studying for tests and passing them with flying colors, and paying attention in class, etc. He really inspired me. But every so often my grades would still drop now and then. Nothing major. I… [cont.]

With today's mob culture on the increase, should corporal punishment be reintroduced?
Q. ASBOs seem to be 'certificates for bad boys' or awards for naughtiness, rather than a deterrant. Policemen can be sued for assault when stopping kids from bricking peoples windows. These youngsters have no respect for society. So, would the introduction of corporal punishment in place of ASBOs do the trick? What do you think? Yob culture, not mob culture. Sorry. Mouthscradle. It is not a view. It is a question. Nothing more.

Do you think corporal Punishment should be brought back to school?
Q. What do you, teachers think? What about you, parents? And what about you, students? I personally think that if corporal punishment was brought back to schools as a last resort, there might be less people sitting around in school offices because they pulled a prank or something.

A. Ah...this is one of those questions that gets me going. I usually sign a paper at the begining of every school year either to give permission or not for my son to recieve corporal punishment. I usually didn't give permission for my son to recieve swats. This year was different. I had enough of my son's hijinks in school, and the topper was a forged letter from my WIFE excusing him from something or another because he was supposedly helping ME study. I'm an EMT student. I seriously doubt my son could help me study. I was called and notified by the assistant principal of the letter in question. So I hurried down there and set up the scene. I wanted the Vice Principle to confront my son about the letter and I wanted him to re-iterate about… [cont.]

Corporal punishment is the deliberate infliction of pain as retribution for an offence, or for the purpose of disciplining or reforming a wrongdoer, or to change an undesirable attitude or behaviour. Is it true they still use corporal punishment in English schools?
Q. Well I'm transferring to a boarding school in England this year. I've never been to England before but my friend told me they still use corporal punishment, is that true? I'm not exactly a saint all the time so I'm kind of nervous, my grades are good but I'm always in detention. If they do use it, is there anyway of getting out of it. Help please. Also I'm going to be in Year 9, Key stage 3, what does that mean?
Asked by n - Wed Aug 27 05:44:39 2008 - Studying Abroad - 9 Answers - Comments

A. No. It's not true, they haven't used corporal punishment in decades in state schools. It was properly banned in private schools in the 90's I think. I think your friend is just trying to wind you up. Don't worry about it, the worst you'll get is detention or clean up duty. Although you wouldn't be worrying about it if you behaved yourself, would you. Keg stage 3, is how we split up the education in Britain. Key stage 3 covers years 7,8 and 9. It's the first part of secondary school. Year 9 is similar to the American 8th grade. (I'm assuming that's where you are from). I'm in Year 11, key stage 4. You'll have a lot of fun here, enjoy.

A. I think it would cause a drastic improvement. Right now, children have ZERO discipline in school - if a teacher so much as stands them in a corner their will be groups whining that it's some sort of emotional torture.

A. This is a very interesting question! There are a number of cultural overtones in this concept. Actually, at least two Native American Indian tribes have tried /or did resurrect this form of punishment. Confinement is not a tradition among the tribes for wrong-doers; culturally , confinement is a cruel and unusual punishment. The one tribe that did carry out this punishment; the experiment at traditional justice was a failure. The "convict" was a young (twenty something)girl and could not endure the lashing. The choice of lashing or jail was given and she chose the lashing. This concept has been the subject of much debate; whether there should be a choice. The pros side advocates that, the corporal punishment choice allows someone… [cont.]

I Need a Thesis Statement for My Argumentative Research Essay on Corporal Punishment?
Q. I need some help coming up with my thesis for my argumentative research essay on Corporal Punishment. I want to argue against the corporal punishment (spanking, paddling, etc.) of children.
Asked by Jenny - Thu May 7 16:44:09 2009 - Homework Help - 1 Answers - Comments

A. A thesis statement is like a road map for your paper. It tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper. It tells the reader how you will address the subject, and directly answers any questions asked of you. The thesis statement interprets the question or the subject, offers a possible way of understanding it. A thesis statement often offers a point of view that others might disagree with. It is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph, and it presents your argument. The rest of the paper, the body of your essay, gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic and sense and believability of your interpretation. So keep all of those thoughts in mind in constructing your thesis… [cont.]

What are the limits of Corporal Punishment in Texas?

A. Texas law states that a parent, guardian or someone with consent (in loco parentis) can use force "to the degree the actor reasonably believes the force is necessary to discipline the child or to safeguard or promote his welfare". Most of justifiable conduct is based on what is reasonable. What is reasonable to you may not be reasonable to me, or visa versa. So they use what your city/county decides as reasonable. That is why one city/county will prosecute someone for the same crime another city/county does not prosecute for. The definition of abuse may help:

What's the Difference Between Corporal Punishment and Child Abuse? Is There a Line between the 2?
Q. I'm 15 and my mother used to give me spanking and stuff like that and my dad used the belt twice but i never really saw it as abuse. It got it through my head that i should never do what ever i did wrong again and it didn't scar me. and i have a lot of friends who's parents do the same thing and they are fine. i was just thinking: is there a line between child abuse and Corporal punishment?

A. The line in most jurisdictions is whether it leaves a mark. A welt or a bruise would be enough. Even redness that stays for a while might be enough to warrant an investigation by protective services.

Is corporal punishment really necessary to control young children?
Q. Some people say that corporal punishment (e.g. spanking and slapping) can potentially leave psychological scars on the child. Also, it could lead to resentment against their parents. Others say that children who are punished in this way are generally more behaved than other children who are not. Also, that a young child has to learn right from wrong. Adults who may have been punished this way may say that it never did them any harm. What is your opinion/view?

A. I was personally raised with discipline (spanking and swat to the thigh) and time outs as a child, but they were never extremely harsh or severe and my parents used it for the appropriate things. I personally was not scared by it, but then again my brother and I were good kids. I personally cant say its a good or bad thing, because it all depends on a childs personal state of mind. Some children are more timid then others, and those are mostly the type who become scared and badly hurt by it, specially if the adults 'discipline' is too forceful to where it could be considered abuse due to bruising and such. I was never afraid of my parents for it, because my father also used a very stern voice and deep eye to eye contact when it came to… [cont.]

What does corporal punishment have to do with bullies?
Q. I heard that corporal punishment is the reason why children bully others, but why? What is it in corporal punishment that turned the children bad?
Asked by mysterious i - Tue Feb 6 09:05:09 2007 - Parenting - 7 Answers - Comments

A. Nothing, spanking has been done for generations with positive effects. Bulling is when children are screaming for attention. If a parent uses spanking along with lots of quality time and love, I can grantee you that child will be better off. Bulling is a result of lack of quality time children receive from their parents.

What are the corporal punishment laws in Ohio?
Q. Today, I've been worried that my mom might be physically abuse and I seriously considered calling the police after she left for work because she was downstairs cussing uncontrollably at my brother, screaming, hitting him with something so many times I lost count and she didn't leave any bruises. I want to know the corporal punishment laws in Ohio because they aren't really clear when I look online.

A. I wouldn't call the police, but I would call your school guidance counselor (or better yet, your brothers school guidance counselor) and inform them of what is going on. They are mandated to help you, and it would be better all around than involving the police.
