Do you think corporal punishment is an appropriate form of discipline?
Q. My family has always believed in spanking. I am godmother to my cousins beautiful daughter and she stays with me often. Although I am against corporal punishment, my cousin spanks her daughter on occassion. To what extent do you think spanking is appropriate? What do you think are acceptable forms of discipline for a five year old child? No, I wouldn't hurt my goddaughter or anyone else. My parents were never abusive and stopped spanking me when I was twelve. I just don't know if it's my place to step in since it's my cousins daughter and not my own.

A. I don't know why spanking has suddenly become such an explosive issue here on the Y!A... but, regardless, you have an issue that I think a lot of aunts, uncles, and god parents (including myself!) have had questions about. Personally, I think that spanking is a last-ditch effort... if behavior isn't changing and is getting more frequent despite countless attempts at alternative discipline. But punishment should never be given out of anger. The objective of discipline is to change/redirect a child's behavior... NOT vent out your frustration with them... so that's the extent of which I think spanking is appropriate... when nothing else has worked and the behavior escalates. As for taking care of your god daughter, you need to stick with… [cont.]
